In September 2004, the manned weather station at the summit was closed after 72 years in operation. Observers monitored radar sweeps that detected typhoons and heavy rains. The station, which was the highest in Japan at 3,780 metres (12,400 ft), was replaced by a fully-automated meteorological system.^[25] As of 2006, the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the United States Marine Corps continue to operate military bases near Mount Fuji.

-It is truly vast with a diameter at the base of 35 - 40 km. It is visible over a massive area of central Japan and if you are lucky you can get a great view of it from an airplane as you are coming in to the country.

-Asiatic Black Bears have been sited on Mt. Fuji, but scientists are not sure if animals live on Mount Fuji.

 

37 living species are recorded, including the rare Japanese serow. Asiatic black bears are also seen on occasion. Japanese squirrels and foxes can be viewed from the mountain base to Shin-gogoume.

A single ecosystem is formed of living things, water, and soil through the interrelation of the small animals that live in the grass fields, forests, and near water and the birds and animals that prey on them. If one element is missing, the system collapses.
Unfortunately, Mt. Fuji's natural world is disappearing each year as uncaring people drive four-wheel drive vehicles and motorcycles in areas they are not supposed to be used in, destroying vegetation and rare flowering plants.

Climate:

 •   Excluding parts of summer, the monthly average temperature at Mount Fuji's peak is almost always below   freezing and the annual average temperature is -7.1^oC. Even on days when the temperature at level ground is 30^oC, if you climb to Gogoume it drops to 16^oC and is only 7^oC at the peak. There is a 22^oC average difference throughout the year between the level ground of Mishima and Mt. Fuji's peak.
